On death penalty and the penal system in Nigeria ?

French philosopher Françoise Maire Arouet (pen name Voltaire 1694-1778) was right when he wrote “if we are to abolish the death penalty, let the murderers lead the way”. If a man takes some one else life in cool blood, then let him pay with his life. This may sound harsh but forgive me….its my candid opinion.

Any thoughts to share with us on law reform?

English legal philosopher and jurist Lord Denning had written in the case of Packer v Packer (1954) “What is the argument on the other side? Only this that no case has been found in which it has been done before. That argument does not appeal to me in the least. If we never do anything which has not been done before, we shall never get anywhere; the law will stand still whilst the rest of the world goes on: and that will be bad for both”. I agree with him completely. Laws must be reformed to meet the socio economic needs of the times. Outdated laws serve no good purpose.

Any contributions to make on any political question or on the state of the Nigerian nation-especially under the present democratic dispensation?

The popular view is that the Nigerian nation will outlive all of us 250 million Nigerian currently alive.. That is my guess. It is pointless dissipating energies to try and balkanize the nation. Democracy has come to stay too… make no mistakes about that. Sadly though, it is this sort of reasoning that could spell disaster if we rest on our oars and continue the spate of negative pursuits we now indulge in. no country has yet survived a second civil war.

On Life A fter death?

I think it’s really nothing to worry about so long as you lived well, helped mankind and made your own contributions to the advancement of humanity whilst here on earth. According to Voltaire “With this secret, we can enjoy life and have no fear from death...."Every man is guilty of all the good he didn't do” (Voltaire 1694 - 1778)

Any embarassing moments to share with us?

My three year old son suddenly asked to know why the sister’s genitalia was different from his. I was flustered and chased him away without an answer.
